My dad got here yesterday afternoon, and after hanging out (and grandpa getting lots and lots of hugs and kisses☺) we were going to go out to dinner.
Art’s friend Dan called, and Art told me that he wanted to go over to Dan’s house because he was having problems w/ his dirt-bike, and he wanted to give his buddy and helping hand (what a terrific friend), then they might go out if they got it fixed and see if/how it was working.
This did not please me.
1. I was thinking this was awfully rude, seeing how my Dad had just gotten here (riding his Harley through rain/sleet for 2 days…which is another story, but he didn’t have any real problems…just cold hands and feet), and we were just about to walk out the door prior to the phone call.
2. I hate Art’s dirt-bike, and the time that gets put into it; either riding it, fixing it, cleaning it, looking for parts for it, daydreaming about tinkering with it, daydreaming about riding it…. The list goes on.
3. Dirt-bikes are my nemesis… Art’s relentless infatuation with bikes over the last decade has made me jaded… every time the word dirt-bike (in any context) gets mentioned by him, the Darth Vader / Storm Trooper theme starts playing in my head.
Anyhoo, he… being the smart guy that he is (and being married to me for 12+ years)… just looks at my Dad and says “Hey Terry, Summer thinks it would be rude for me to bail out on dinner to go and help my friend work on his dirt-bike”. Of course my Dad (being the laid-back, cool guy that he is) says “No problem… I don’t care” (which is totally true… as long as he’s got Serayah and Cam with him neither mine nor Art’s presence is really required). So off we go, and I leave Art with his “manly” pursuits of helping his friend work on his bike… Uh huh.
About 10 minutes after leaving (not really enough time to start digging into solving a mechanical problem, keep in mind) my cell phone rings with an unfamiliar Utah number….
Me: “Hello?”
Art: (Sounding giddy) “Hey… Where are you?”
Me: (Confused by the call) “Where are you?”
Art: (Really Happy) “Where are you?”
Me: (Really confused.. and still driving the car) “Why… Where are you???”
Art: (Gibberish)
Me: (Kinda more annoyed than when we left) “We’re on our way to dinner” (Duh)
Art: (Still Giddy) “Where are you?”
Me: (Rather ticked) “WE’RE DRIVING ON OUR WAY TO DINNER…. WHY DO YOU WANT TO KNOW???”
Art: (More weird background noise)
Me: “Have you been drinking?” (and those of you who know him, know that he doesn’t drink)
Art: (Giggle) “No” (Shuffling Noise)
Dan: (Sounding like a guy from Minnesota) “Hey”
Me: (Seriously Confused) “Why is Art calling me wanting to know where I’m at?”
Dan: “He doesn’t usually call you wanting to know where you’re at?”
Me: (Thinking his friend is an idiot) “No.”
Dan: “Oh. We’ll talk to him and make sure he does that more in the future”
Me: (What???) “Is everything OK?”
Dan: “Yeah.. Everything’s fine… I guess we’ll talk to you later… Bye”
Me: “Uh… Bye”.
I relay the conversation to my Dad… who’s been looking at me strangely hearing my side of the conversation. My Dad asks if he hit his head. I say no… of course not. (I’m thinking that maybe he knew that I was ticked and was trying to feel me out for true anger or not… not really his usual approach, but he’s surrounded by testosterone, so who knows?)
Then, my phone rings again… same number.
Me: (Joking) “Did you hit your head or something?”
Chris: (The other… and most together… guy with them) “Uh… well he’s not really hurt, but Art’s having some problems remembering some stuff… He doesn’t know how he got here and he’s acting kind of funny”
Me: (Heart falling to the bottom of my stomach, and trying to figure out if I can do a U-turn during rush hour) “Umm… What Happened?????”Chris: (with Art in the background yelling “I’m fine… go to dinner!!) “We’re not sure… he was behind us”
Me: (Finding a spot to turn around) “Can you please get him home so I can take him to the Dr.?” Art: (in the background) “This is stupid… I’m fine… Go to Dinner!!!” (Right.)
To make a longer story short, there had been an incident involving him, and excessive rate of speed, a cattle guard, a fence-post and a barbed-wire fence (which miraculously didn’t cause any real damage.)… I’d give you more details, but Art still doesn’t really remember what exactly happened.
I took him to urgent care, and because he was wearing his helmet, he doesn’t have a concussion (apparently short-term memory loss isn’t uncommon with a bonk on the head), his hipbone bruised a big muscle internally (he’s still limping), his shoulder (what apparently took the brunt of the fall) is really sore, and he got some “bumps and bruises”. The doctor’s main comment: “I’m giving you a prescription for the pain… which will be worse tomorrow… It’ll say take 1 or 2… Go home and take 2.”
All in all he was really lucky. (See the post below for the picture of his thigh, which he tells me, “doesn’t bug me at all… my hip is kinda sore, but its my shoulder that hurts the most”.
Fantastic… that bruise doesn’t hurt in comparison… but he’s just “fine”!!!
After all this, he was ticked that I put the kibash on his plans to go riding in the morning.
You might think that he really did get a concussion with that brilliant course of thinking, but sadly, this is just typical Art… and is par for the course.
I guess the moral of the story is that bailing on dinner plans last minute to go play with your friends will not end well… and to always wear a helmet.

Fun at the Park

.....................................................................
Hey all...
This will just be a quickie, but I took the kiddos to the park today for a fun "picnic". We went with our neighbors, and the kids had a ton of fun. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get any pics of all the kiddos together so you could see the beautiful Ricks children (they couldn't stay very long), but here are some of Serayah and Cam. I swear, Serayah's going to be a rock-climber or something! If she sees some other kiddo do something, she's bound and determined to give it a go too. Oh, and if I didn't mention it an earlier blog, Cam said his first sentence. "Want my Daddy!". Figures, huh?
☺

Earrings

Well, the other day we were walking through the mall, and I decided to go ahead and let Serayah get her ears pierced. She's been saying she wants earrings, & I told her she'd have to wait until she got older, but I just decided that she could go ahead and get them done now.
Being the mean (smart?) mommy that I am, I never actually let her know that it would hurt, so she was pretty caught off guard when the actual piercing happened. All in all, it went well (there were 2 ladies piercing her, so it would be done all at once). She cried for a few seconds, but then she spotted the mirror.... All tears dried up instantly. From that moment on, there was never a mirror passed without Serayah stopping to twist and turn and proclaim herself beautiful. You can't really tell from the picture, but the earrings are little pink star-shaped crystals.
Also, I'm posting a picture that Art took of the 2 of us the other day.

I'm Back!

I'm sure that you've probably thought I'd given up on the whole "blog" thing, right? Actually, the last couple of weeks have been really, really busy (and a whole lot of fun), and I haven't had any time to post anything. I'm probably going to post several in a row so I can include different pictures, but here's a general rundown.
Our wonderful friends: Erik, Shiela, Moriah, Jase and Kale came over to visit us from Oregon. We had a terrific time with them, and were really sad to see them go. Over the course of their visit we went to the bounce house, the zoo, Arches national park, the dinosaur museum, and had tons of fun! They are really great friends and their kids are almost 6(Moriah), 4(Jase), and 9 months(Kale). Serayah had a blast having other kids to play with all the time and keeps asking when we can see them again. I'm including a few pictures from the dinosaur museum in this post. I'm a complete dork, and forgot to take my camera to Arches (it's absoutely spectacular), but Shiela is a fantastic photographer, and I'm going to make her give me all of her pictures that she took, so I'll make a post later to show off what we did there (I'll also take credit for the breathtaking photos, so you'll all be amazed at my artistic talent!).
The dinosaur museum was pretty cool... It's really close to our house, and has the most complete collection of complete dinosaur skeletons in North America... who knew? Serayah wasn't too impressed by all of the large skeletons or weird dinosaur noises coming from the speakers, and got pretty freaked out. (This coming from the girl who can't wait to go fast in a car or on a ride, and who wanted to try and climb down the 30 foot canyon wall in Arches). After we were getting ready to leave though, she begged to go again, and hasn't quit asking about our next trip, so I'm sure we'll be going back soon.
The pictures are of Serayah, Moriah and Jase playing in the sand/water table and all 4 of them (minus baby Kale, of coure) "digging" for fossils. Also a couple of solo shots of the kiddos. I'm not too sure what Cam was looking at in the one picture, but it cracks me up!
Well, I guess that's all for now, but I'll be posting more ASAP.
Miss all of you...

Spring Is Here!!

Well, I know it's been a while since I've posted anything, but honestly, not much has been happening.
Serayah and Cam (and their Mommy and Daddy too) were all sick last week, so I'm happy to report that we're all feeling better. Cam's still trying to pop that last incisor through though, so our nights haven't been so great.
We've been really happy to see some warmer weather (finally), so we've been reveling in our shorts and t-shirts. Cam gets really excited when he wears shorts... you can just see him look down and get this "yeah... I'm the man... check out these puppies..." look. Then he'll run up to you and grin and yank 'em up higher to show you some extra leg, then giggle and run off. Not really sure what that's all about, but whatever. I'll try and snap a picture of him tomorrow after I get him dressed, and hopefully get "the look" captured to post.
Serayah's and Cam both have been really happy to be able to run around outside more. Cam's main objective is to see if he can put anything down Art's motorcycle's exhaust pipe without anyone noticing... be ready for a future post detailing that one. Serayah just loves playing with whomever is running around outside, blowing bubbles, or drawing on the sidewalk with chalk. I've been trying to get some weeds pulled out in the front, but keeping them both out of trouble kind of makes the weed-pulling slow going. Oh well.
I'm putting up a picture I took of Serayah the other day (before it warmed up). Sorry I don't have a recent one of Cam. Sorry this isn't very exciting, but that's life (better than too much excitement!)
Love to all...

Viva Las Vegas!!

Well, we made it to Las Vegas and back, and somehow survived the trip.
We left early Friday (OK... techincally, we were going to leave early... 7am or so, but this is us we're talking about, so it was actually closer to 10). Cam has a sinus infection or something (I'm taking him in to the Dr. tomorrow), and hasn't been sleeping too well... he's also been having a dry-cough, so we weren't too sure how the drive down was going to go.
Fortunately the technology gods have bestowed upon us frazzled parents the wonderous Portable DVD machine. Thank Goodness!!! Although Art and I got really, really sick of Dora.... side note: Why on earth must Dora the Explorer yell everything she says? Seriously... It's REALLY annoying... especially on a 6 hour car-trip with a 3 year-old that doesn't want to watch anything else. Eventually they both fell asleep, and the marvelous sound of silence was all we heard. Aahh.

It's REALLY annoying... especially on a 6 hour car-trip with a 3 year-old that doesn't want to watch anything else. Eventually they both fell asleep, and the marvelous sound of silence was all we heard. Aahh.
We got to our hotel (circus circus... they've got a midway and theme park on site, so no more driving than necessary), and Art's brothers Kelly and Jason and their families met up with us to go to dinner. Let me tell you... Serayah was SO excited to see her cousins (ranging in age from 7 down to 2 weeks!). She was having so much fun she didn't know who to talk to the most.
After dinner we went for a walk down the Strip, and everyone else stayed to watch the pirate ship show in front of Treasure Island. Serayah wasn't having any of that. She's still got her fire phobia, and the combination of fire and pirates (who she declares are "very bad men, Mama") made us decide to leave before she freaked out.
We walked back to our hotel and decided to play some midway games. Serayah did really well and won a dog. Someone in our little party managed to throw a dart and hit a little-tiny star (on the 1st try, no less) and won a really large dog. It wasn't Art, and I wasn't too keen on Serayah or Cam throwing darts, so you can figure out who the magnificent marksman was for yourself... not that I'm bragging or anything.
All was going pretty darn well, then Cam decided that he wasn't going to sleep. At around 2 a.m. (after intermittent screaming every 10 minutes) we almost drove home, but he ate an orange and played for a bit then finally went to sleep. We got up early and had breakfast then met Kelly, Angie, Jessie and Alex at the amusement park. Serayah was really, really stoked to go on her "roller-coaster". Jessie and Kelly were riding something else, so Serayah was by herself, but this really sweet 7-year old named Sidney started playing with Serayah in line and they rode together every time. You can see how much fun Serayah is having in the picture. I wish you all could have heard her cackling laugh the entire ride. It cracked us up!
We went to the midway and played some more games, and Serayah showed me up at this weird Plinko/Pinball game (she ended up winning WAY more than me.. and got herself 2 Stingrays; which she was really excited about).
After that we went to Jason and Diane's house and went to the park to let us take some photos, and then we left for home and got here around 10:30. Fortunately, Cam slept better last night, but we still weren't able to get he and Serayah to sleep right away.
Everything was really fun, but next time I don't want to cram everything into a 2 day trip! We really enjoyed hanging out with everyone and we had to leave too soon. Also, it's 3:45 and we're all still in our PJ's. Poor Artimus had to get up @ 4:45 for work this morning, so I'm sure he's really dragging.
Anyway, that pretty much summed up our quick road-trip. Oh, FYI we drove past Serayah's "Castle", but we didn't have time to stop and get a picture of her in front of her kingdom. Bummer, but maybe next time.
I'll try and write again soon...

Sleeping Beauties

Hey everyone~
Apparently, I've been lax in updating the blog... once again. Basically, our lives are pretty boring, so that's why I haven't been writing anything.
Serayah went and played over at her friend Ellie's house and had a terrific time (that would be Miss Ellie in the picture). They're both in dance and tumbling classes together and she'll be joining Serayah's preschool in the summer, so Serayah's REALLY excited.
I'm guessing that Serayah's going to end up with my slightly warped sense of humor... The other day we were watching America's Funniest Home Videos and there was a hanglider segment. Of course, the hangliders were crashing into various things...mainly trees, so as they'd crash, I'd say "Tree" or "Bush"... whatever was applicable. Well, I'd only done it a few times and quit, and the next video was of a hanglider at the beach. Right after it crashed, I heard this little voice coming out of Serayah (who was still calmly watching TV, and who never looked away from the screen) deadpan "Sand". Uh Oh... stay tuned.
Let's see... Cam thinks that belly-buttons are hysterical. He loves to come and yank up your shirt and poke at you (like I really look like the Pillsbury dough-girl... wait a second... hmmm...) and bust out giggling. Anyway, this new found fascination isn't so good when the neighbors come over to watch a basketball game and their shirts aren't tucked in. I'll just leave it at that.
Speaking of Cam, he and Art took a nap today. When Art and I first got married, he totally weirded me out because he would sleep with his eyes open. If you haven't woken up next to someone doing this, let me tell you, it's not pretty... and kinda freaky. I'm not sure if I bugged him enough about it or what, but he doesn't really do it anymore unless he's really tired. Serayah manages to sleep with her eyes closed, and so do I. I thought it was just Art who had this weird quirk. As you can see from the picture, Cam's inherited Art's open-eye sleeping ability. Yes... he is sleeping in this picture, and the flash didn't even phase him. Go figure.
Well, we're off to Las Vegas in the morning (or, this morning I guess) to visit Art's brothers who will both be there. Serayah's very excited to play with her cousins and ride on a roller coaster again. She also desperately wants to go into the Excaliber hotel/casino. For any of you who don't know, it's all decked out like a huge medieval castle, complete with towers and flags. Last time we were there, she saw it out of the car window and said "Look!!!! It's my castle!" Hmm.. "It's your castle?" I said. Pause. "Yes, mama. I'm going to live there when I get bigger." Lets all hope not.
Anyway, I'm sure the next entry will have pictures of the kids and they're cousins (probably not a castle though).
Hope everyone is well!
Love, Summer

Glasses are Great!

Well, the day has finally arrived! After much ado, Serayah's glasses are finally here. She was very impressed when we went to pick them up, mainly due to the fact that the frames came with a Disney Princess Purse (glasses carrying case).
I've been so proud of her. It took a bit before she would keep them on (putting them in her "purse" was a great tempation), but all in all she wore them most of the day. She seems very happy to be like mommy, and very special that she's got glasses just for her.
Cam is still Cam, so of course he's very interested in Serayah's new specs, and keeps trying to touch them and grab them. Serayah, very forcefully, looks at him and says "Camden... You DON'T Touch my Glasses!"... I'm actually amazed, he seems to have given up on them already. It appears that he'll actually do what Serayah tells him to do (unlike when anyone else tells him to do something!).
Well, that's it for now. I know this is short, but I'm a wuss and am going to bed. I'll update you guys more when anything new happens.
Love to all....

The apple doesn't fall far....

Hi all...
So we found out something pretty interesting yesterday. Any of you who know me very well, (and have had the pleasure of playing games with me), know that I don't really like losing. I would like to think that I've mellowed in my old age, but my innate competitiveness is there... seething just below the surface... ready to erupt at any losing run of Monopoly.
This in itself wouldn't necessarily doom our kiddos... After all, it takes 2 sets of DNA.
Well, any of you who know Artimus very well knows that he's really not much better than me. I recall a game of Trivial Pursuit many years ago when the J. in Elmer J. Fudd (who in the world wouldn't give you credit for just saying Elmer Fudd???) became a HUGE bone of contention in an otherwise civil guys/girls Trivial Pursuit game. Of course, the girls slaughtered the guys in that one anyway...but I digress.
Serayah and I had just broken out the game of Hi-Ho Cherry-O... a basic spin and count pre-school game. Serayah had gotten it figured out; it was our first time playing. Well, for those of you who aren't up on the under 5 age-set games, if you spin and hit certain things, you have to put your cherries back in your tree from your bucket (the point of the game being to completely "pick" your tree of cherries). Well, anytime I spun a "bad" spin, a little voice would gleefully say "uh oh", and this evil, maniacal giggle would start coming at me from my left. I looked around, and the only thing I saw was our dear, sweet Serayah... it couldn't possibly be coming from her...could it? Then I noticed that her finger would "accidentally" move the pointer to the prime spot on the spinner during her turn.... "Sorry, Mom... it was an accident!" (followed my the spooky giggle) Uh-huh. Hmmm.... we might be in for some serious problems when she gets old enough for monopoly... Stay tuned.
Oh, and in case you were wondering why on earth there's a picture of shoes up here, it's for Sheila. One of her boys got a pair of very stylin' black converse high-tops w/ flames, and Serayah LOVES her black and pink converse low-tops, so I thought I'd share.
Hope everyone has a great day.
Love,
~S.

Lions and Tigers and Cops OH MY!

Hi everyone~
Well, lets see... My dad flew in on Thursday so we're all happy about that. Serayah was so excited for her "surprise", and when he came with us to pick her up from preschool she came running, yelling "grandpa, grandpa!"... between you and me, I think he was running and jumping inside more than she was!
On a really bummer note, on the way back from the airport I was taking a back-way because there was construction on the road I normally would have come back on and we're just bopping along on this back road and see 2 police cars pulled over at the side of the road next to each other talking. I crack a joke to Dad about being glad they're not working... I guess I'm safe, huh? Apparently, not so much.
So Mr. Policeman whips out behind me and the lights start a-flashin'. Grrr.... Seriously, I'm mystified. What the heck had I done???? He comes over (looking about 16 years old, and kind of reminescent of Phil Mikelson) and asks for my license/registration. It's at this point that I realize that my book containing my registration/insurance is at home because I had taken it out to look up a dealer phone number. Hmm... This is not looking good. So I ask him if I was speeding. He smiled and said (apologetically (so at this point I'm thinking there's some hope)) that I was going 43. OK... so I'm thinking the speed limit was like 40, or 35 at the least... so the problem would be???? "Well ma'am, the speed limit was still 25 back there". Huh? You've got to be kidding... 25???....what am I going to do... run over a COW at my excessive 43mph?
So my assumption that this is just a courtesy stop to give me a nice warning just flew out the window. Hmm.. now I've got to explain that I don't actually have my registration/insurance with me. He just smiles and walks back to his car with my license. Crap. Now I get to make the phone call to Art to get our policy#. Art's response to my dilemma is annoying, so we'll just leave that out of this.
So now I hop out of the car to walk back to Officer Smiley and give him our insurance info so he can check it out and hopefully not throw Dad, Cam and me in the slammer. (OK, maybe a little bit dramatic, but I haven't been pulled over since I was 18.. I'm entitled.... and for those of you who knew me, and Bossie (my beloved Mustang), and our tenuious relationship with the speed-cops when I was 17, you'll understand why I was rather proud of my spotless record for the last 14 years!)
Anyway, Officer Smiley actually turned out to be a pretty OK guy. He didn't really care that I was driving w/o my pertinent information, and wrote out the ticket so it looked like I was only 9 mph over, rather than the 18mph... Also, I guess I can go to traffic school (a barrel of fun, I'm sure) and my cow-endangerment won't go on my driving record. Basically it looks like the city sets out speed traps then gets the extra $$ to pay for dumb-driving school... A double $$ coup for them... very smart.... and annoying... but at least I know I can rest at night knowing the cows are safe.
On a less annoying note, Artimus went to "play with his friends" (Serayah's interpretation) yesterday, and went up for a last snowboarding trip this season. Dad and I took the kiddos to the Zoo up in Salt Lake. We had so much fun! When we got there, Serayah saw the little train and just HAD to go. We went, then she was ready for the Animals. We decided that Cam might enjoy walking around, so he was let out of the stroller. (Note to self.... NEVER let Cam out of the stroller if/when I take them by myself). OH BOY! Between Serayah desperate to get to the animals, and Cam wanting to go in any direction other than the way Serayah wanted to go it was tough going! Eventually we got into a rhythm, and all was well (then I gave up an put Cam back in the stroller for a bit). Serayah loved everything and is a speed-zoo-runner. She'd run to an animal, look at him for 5-10 seconds, then turn and say "Lets go see something else, Mom!", then off we'd go. It really is a great zoo, and after riding the train 1 more time on the way out (It was evidently a MUST) we came on home. Both kids fell asleep in the car and both were pretty tuckered out last night. I'm posting a few snapshots I got while we were there.
Anyway, I guess that's enough of a novel for now...
Hope everyone's doing OK!

To give the girl her due...

Well, since I put up a hair pic of Cam, I thought it was only fair to give Serayah her shot too. She loves having "Pretty ponytails", and I found some really fun scrunchies (are my 1990's showing?), so this was her look for school yesterday. She was very impressed, left it in all day and was bummed that we took it out to get ready for bed.
Also, just thought that you should know that apparently some of the teaching manners lesssons have started to stick with her. The other day we were in the car, after going grocery shopping, and I was backing out of the space and heard "I'm dont' have my seatbelt, Mommy!". Ugh... bad, bad mommy. So I pull back in and buckle her in. As I'm backing back out, I thanked her for being so good and telling me about the seatbelt..etc. Then I hear this little voice pipe up "It was my pleasure, mommy!". She cracks me up!
Oh, I also got news that her frames are on backorder (apparently Disney Princess Frames are quite the look), so it'll be a couple of weeks before you get to see her new specs.
Oh, and I told Artimus about the "hair envy" comment about Cam's 'do, and he cracked up (and sniffled a bit, mourning his great loss).
Love to all
~S.
